Hathern Parish Council - Litter Picking Guidelines for Litter Picking on Hathern Park and Adjacent Sports Field. 1. Clothing and Equipment a. Litter pickers should wear appropriate clothing and protective wear. This must include protective gloves and strong footwear. b. Refuse sack and a “sharps bin” are available from the Clerk, as is a “helping hand” litter picking stick. 2. Hazards a. Broken glass, sharp metal pieces etc can break through refuse sacks and may cause injury. Handle with care and deposit in the sharps bin. b. If you come across hypodermic needles or drugs-related litter do not touch these. Make a note of their location and report the find immediately to the Clerk who will organise their removal via the Borough Council who have a rapid response service for such events. c. If very large or dangerous items of waste such as unidentified drums, cans or canisters of chemicals, poisons or insecticides are found again do not touch and contact the Clerk immediately who will contact the Environment Agency on 0800 807060 . d. If you discover fly-tipping, contact the Clerk who will report it to the Police, the Environment Agency, and to the Borough Council for cleaning up. Do not approach fly-tippers under any circumstances – they are doing something illegal and are unlikely to welcome people observing them. Adopted by Hathern Parish Council 6th April 2009 |
